Latin America May Emerge Stronger From Crisis

Latin America may emerge from the current crisis in a stronger position than other regions, as most participants in the International Economic Forum Latin America and the Caribbean agreed. On their route to Davos and in the midst of the global financial storm hitting Latin American economies, finance ministers, central bankers and leading business leaders from Latin America and Europe met in Paris on 26 January to discuss the region’s Latin America’s economic outlook. View the speaker's presentations.

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) aims to reduce secrecy in the sector, but a study by the OECD Development Centre shows that the result is very different. In fact, corruption control is worse in EITI countries than in other resource-rich nations not implementing the initiative. EITI could become more effective if disclosure standards were more strict, if independent civil society organisations were strengthened and transparency in resource revenues was linked to judicial institutions. (Read the Policy Insights "Extracting More From EITI" )
